Four Loyola Alumni Reflect on Careers in Education as They Retire as Superintendents
After decades of leadership in education, four Loyola University Chicago alumni are retiring from their roles as superintendents across Illinois. Ed Condon, Michael Lubelfeld, Eric Twadell, and Cindy Whittaker have each shaped their school communities through a commitment to student-centered leadership, service, and equity.
In the following Q&As, they reflect on the experiences that shaped their work, key moments from their careers, and what they take with them into retirement.

Ed Condon
River Forest School District 90
Ed Condon (PhD ‘09) is retiring after more than 35 years in education, including serving as superintendent of River Forest School District 90 since 2011. Before joining District 90, he served for eight years as principal of Butler Junior High School in Oak Brook, Illinois.
Condon began his career as a high school social studies teacher in Virginia after earning a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Richmond. During his tenure at District 90, he led numerous initiatives, including facility improvements, curriculum enhancements, the implementation of full-day kindergarten, and expanded school safety and security measures.
He earned a doctorate in educational administration from Loyola University Chicago.

Michael Lubelfeld
North Shore School District 112
Michael Lubelfeld (EdD ’05) has served as a public school superintendent in Illinois since 2010, most recently leading North Shore School District 112, which serves the communities of Highland Park and Highwood, Illinois. A nationally recognized educational leader, he has focused on leadership development, student voice, and innovative educational practices throughout his career.
Lubelfeld is a frequent speaker and the co-author of several books on educational leadership and school culture. His work has earned multiple professional honors, including the 2021 Administration and Supervision Distinguished Alumni Award from the Loyola University Chicago’s School of Education.
He earned a doctorate in educational leadership from Loyola University Chicago.

Eric Twadell
Adlai E. Stevenson High School District 125
Eric Twadell (MEd ’98, PhD ’07) is retiring as superintendent of Adlai E. Stevenson High School District 125 in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Before serving as superintendent, he held several roles at Stevenson, including social studies teacher, curriculum director, and assistant superintendent for leadership and organizational development.
Twadell has authored multiple books and professional articles and is recognized for his work advancing professional learning communities and school improvement efforts nationwide. In addition to his work in education, he has coached athletic teams and facilitated outdoor education and adventure travel programs.
He earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Loyola University Chicago.

Cindy Whittaker
Fairview School District 72
Cindy Whittaker (BSED ’93, EdD ’01) is retiring as superintendent of Fairview School District 72, a pre-K–8 district serving approximately 730 students in a single school. As superintendent, she has overseen the district’s instructional programs, fiscal planning, staff recruitment and retention, and facility operations while fostering a student-centered learning environment.
Whittaker’s leadership has focused on preparing students to become productive citizens in a global society through strong partnerships with families and the broader community. Throughout her tenure, she has emphasized student well-being, academic excellence, and community engagement.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a doctorate in educational supervision from Loyola University Chicago.
